Rabbi Charles Sheer, a fixture at the Barnard-Columbia Hillel for over
three decades who is widely credited with building it into one of the most
vibrant campus Jewish groups in the country, may be forced to leave the
institution at the end of the semester. But not if a group of alumni -- who
had amassed almost 600 signatures on an on-line petition by mid-week -- has
