Every year, on the Thursday preceding Lent, Armenians throughout the world
celebrate the anniversary of a very important event in their history: the
Vartanantz War, waged between Zoroastrian Persia and Christian Armenia in
the year 451 A.D. This war has been named after its hero, General Vartan
Mamigonian.

Why was this war waged? The circumstances were as follows: In the fifth
century A.D., the Sassanid Persian Empire had inclinations toward world
domination. It wanted to occupy Mesopotamia, reach Asia Minor and
