African leaders vow to rescue Niger River

PARIS, Apr 27, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Leaders from nine African countries have vowed to better manage the waters of the Niger River, threatened by the region's booming population and the effects of global climate change.

"For many populations of sub-Saharan Africa, access to water remains a daily challenge," said French President Jacques Chirac, in the opening address of the two-day meeting in Paris, which ended Tuesday.
