It's not that singing gospel music required dressing in a non-fashionable
way. But up until fairly recently, there was a kind of unspoken rule that
if an artist was going to sing about the Lord, they should look "holy."

With the emergence of contemporary gospel music, which aligns itself
closely with R&B and even hip-hop, a different state of mind developed.
Just as proponents of contemporary gospel music maintained that there was
nothing in the Bible or anyplace else saying what gospel music "should"
sound like, so it was with the way gospel artists ...
