Paul Warwick Thompson was a young curator in London when he spotted a small, simple ladle from Germany's Bauhaus school _ or so he thought.
As it turns out, the piece from the 1880s or so predated Bauhaus by a good 40 years. Astounded, Thompson determined to reintroduce its maker, English designer Christopher Dresser, to a larger audience. Sixteen years later, as director of the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, he's doing just that with "Shock of the Old: Christopher Dresser."
