Eleventh century German silver coins found on Baltic island of Gotland

A family removing a tree from their garden on the Swedish island of Gotland found a treasure under the stump: 280 silver coins from the early 11th century.

The coins, most of them from Germany, and some smaller twisted silver pieces were found a couple of weeks ago, archaeologist Leif Zerpe of the Gotland county museum said Monday.

The family didn't spot the treasure immediately after pulling the stump, he said.

"At first, they didn't see anything of particular interest, but after a couple of days, they saw something glittering in the hole," ...
