Hundreds of houses flooded in southern Kazakhstan

The Syr Darya River has flooded more than 340 houses in southern Kazakhstan and the water level is still rising, threatening more villages, emergency officials said Friday.
Water has covered an area of 600 square kilometers (240 square miles) in the Kyzyl-Orda region and is approaching Aksu village, with a population of 1,700, said Emergency Situations Agency spokesman Kairzhan Turezhanov.
Hundreds more people in the Dauenbai village and nearby districts are also in danger of imminent flooding, he said.
