Fed: Ag production down 17 per cent to $33 bln 02/03: ABS

CANBERRA, Jan 28 AAP - The gross value of agricultural production dropped 17 per cent
to $33 billion in 2002-03, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said today.

In a snapshot of the drain of the drought on the economy, the bureau said an increase
in prices for some commodities only went some way to offsetting the dramatic falls in
total production.

The value of crop production fell 26 per cent to $15.9 billion, with the worst hit
wheat, which dropped 59 per cent to $2.6 billion.
