Planners approve Ireland's first incinerator in Cork harbor

Planning authorities granted approval Friday for constructing Ireland's first waste incinerator, but environmentalists vowed to thwart the project.

Ireland's planning board approved the proposed euro70 million (US$90 million) harborside incinerator in Cork, Ireland's second-largest city, on a 9-1 vote.

The incinerator would specialize in the disposal of industrial waste produced by more than 120 pharmaceutical and chemical plants in Ireland. Such firms currently must export their waste to other European Union states.
