Zanzibar's government ordered the largest newspaper in the semi-autonomous Indian Ocean archipelago to shut down without giving a reason for the action, one of the newspaper's owners said Monday.

Ali Nabwa said the independent Dira newspaper received a letter Monday ordering its owners to immediately halt publishing the weekly tabloid for the "public good and peace."
