He was the author of some 20 plays, many of them spectacular hits on
Broadway, a multifaceted writer who began his career in the late 1920s and
continued producing work for the stage till well into the '60s. Often
described as "the Boswell of the overprivileged," his light, drawing-room
comedies, a genre more associated with the British, were performed by some
of the most polished actors of the time -- the Lunts, Ina Claire, Katharine
Cornell and Noel Coward.
He also wrote screenplays for Hollywood -- among them, "Queen Christina"
and "Anna Karenina," both ...
