A 21-year-old Filipino-American marine reservist is facing a court-material
here for going AWOL (absent without leave) to avoid development to Iraq and
declaring himself a conscientious objector to war, and a homosexual.

Lance Cpl. Stephen Pacis Funk is charged with "intent to shirk important
service" for taking 47 days of authorized leave earlier this year, as his
reserve unit in California was mobilized for war in Iraq on Feb. 9.

A pretrial hearing for his court material began Monday (Aug. 11) at the
Marine reserve headquarters. With his trial set for Sept. 4, he is ...
