I REFER to the article "Who was Sinbad the sailor?" (NST, Jan 1). The writer argues that Sinbad is Arabicised from Sanbao, which is Mandarin for three jewels, an honorific given to Admiral Zheng He, or Cheng Ho, for the services he rendered, which made him a treasure of the Middle Kingdom.

Cheng Ho made seven voyages between 1405 and 1433 visiting a number of countries in Southeast Asia, reaching Sri Lanka, India ...
