When Secretary of State Colin Powell took off for Pakistan last week to
meet with President Pervez Musharraf I sensed the repeat of a scenario that
been played out before in the relationship between the U.S. and Iran and it
reminded me of just how long the U. S. had used its influence in a manner
that alienated people in that region. For example, many of us watched
