EMERYVILLE -- African Americans who attended a recent Black labor union
speech here say California's second-highest ranking official, who is
Hispanic, did not make a racial slur and use the N-word before an
African-American audience celebrating Black History Month.

And, they say coverage of the incident by the white media again shows how
the mainstream press misses the mark when it comes to the sensitive issue
of race.
