Louis Riel: Story in a pouch
Louis Riel, born in Red River, Manitoba in 1844, led a Metis rebellion
against the Canadian government in 1869. A provisional government headed by
Riel helped establish the Province of Manitoba in 1870.
He was elected to the Canadian House of Commons three times but was unable
to take his seat because there was a price on his head due to his part in
the rebellion.
In 1885, his patience with the dominion of Canada exhausted, Riel formed a
regional government and a rebellion was declared. The Metis were defeated
