It would be an insult to the memory of John Vliet Lindsay to include in any
newspaper carrying his obituary words about someone such as Rudolph
Giuliani. They differed in so many respects. Perhaps the most primary of
those was that John Lindsay knew that in order for this city to survive,
Blacks, whites, Jews, Poles, Hispanics and Asians had to learn to live
together if there were any hope that any of us would survive and prosper.
Lindsay cared about the survival of the city and its people. Giuliani does
