The art of New York City

The landmark exhibition, "Art and the Empire City: New York, 1825-1861," is
on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from now until Jan. 7. The show
explores the visual arts in America during this time, chronicling New
York's ascendancy to the position of the nation's primary art center and
capital of culture, a role it has kept ever since. The presentation, made
possible by Fleet, features some 310 works from 84 lenders in the United
States and Europe.
