William Grant Still--Composer
William Grant Still (1895-1978) was often referred to during his most
celebrated times as the "Dean of Afro-American music." A classical composer
of such prestige and renown, his honors outnumber those of any other
American composer.
W.G. Still was born in Mississippi but grew up mainly in Little Rock,
Arkansas. His natural father, a college professor, died before he was born;
fortunately, his stepfather was kind and loving and raised him as his own.
