The Gettysburg Address as the Centerpiece of American Racial Discourse
AND GOD SAW that what he had made was good, and thus was conceived the idea
of "equality." Planted and nurtured in the womb of religious belief, its
birth would first sunder a nation and later become its essence. Evocations
of equality in public discourse are useful reference points in tracing its
history, because they are symptomatic of the uniquely American struggle to
find "our better angels." One defining moment is Abraham Lincoln's
Gettysburg Address ...
