The violent strife tearing Israel apart may be taking place halfway around
the world, but it was close to the hearts, and uppermost in the minds, of
Jews in New York as they gathered in synagogues for the Day of Atonement on
Sunday night and Monday.

"People were worried about a war starting," said Rabbi Carie Carter of
