Honoring Pioneers Who Helped Eradicate Tay-Sachs
Samuel and Ruth Dunkell, who in 1957 founded the National Tay-Sachs
Association after they lost a child to the deadly hereditary disease, have
had their pioneering work recognized recently in a number of ways. The
Yeshiva University Museum mounted an exhibit, "Reach for the Moon: When Art
and Medical Science Intersect," now traveling, that details the Dunkell's
struggle to educate the Jewish community about Tay-Sachs and shows how that
struggle affected Mrs. Dunkell's art. The couple is also the focus of a new
