LETTER FROM ISRAEL: Kirkland's Long View

The friends who gathered at the American Independence Park near Jerusalem
on the morning of April 6 came to honor one of Israel's most loyal friends,
the American trade union leader Lane Kirkland, who died last August at the
age of 77. The ceremony was organized by two of Kirkland's oldest friends
-- former Ambassador to the U.S. Simcha Dinitz and Nachik Navoth, who
served with Mr. Dinitz at the Washington Embassy in the 1970s. Others in
