Sir Alexander Bustamante, hero of Jamaica's struggle for national
sovereignty and the Caribbean island's first prime minister when it became
independent, died at the age of 93 following a long illness.

He was a powerful labor leader and a firey, often flamboyant politician.
During four years from 1934 to 1938, he had impressed his name on the
society by a series of letters to the editor of the island's
long-established daily newspaper, The Gleaner, and occasionally to British
