Atsuko "Akko' Nishimura, an activist in the martial arts and API
communities, was struck and killed by a driver in Oakland while on her way
gto teach class at Hand to Hand SelfDefense Center on Feb. 17. She was 35
years old.
Akko Nishimura identified herself in many ways: She was second-generation
Japanese American, a martial artist, a woman who loved her life partner, an
instructor of self-defense and safety awareness, a visual artist, a
community organizer -- and above all, a "bridge person."
