Dateline: MADERA, California The door opens, just a crack. Regina Lopez peers through. Three-year- old Felix clings to her legs, and her five other children peek through the gaps. She says nothing to a visitor.

She's not used to talking to strangers _ in fact, most strangers wouldn' t understand her. Lopez is one of the nearly 100,000 immigrants from Oaxaca, in southwest Mexico, to have settled in California, and speaks only her native Mixtec language.
