Fed: Hollingworth not the first controversial GG

MELBOURNE, May 25 AAP - Dr Peter Hollingworth's resignation as governor-general may be unprecedented, but it's not the first controversy to befall Australia' s vice-regal office.

For sheer impact, even today's events may not in the end rival Sir John Kerr and his 1975 dismissal of the Whitlam Labor government.

Sir John was notorious, also, for a suspiciously incoherent speech he gave at a Melbourne Cup presentation in the 1970s.
