LISBON, Mar. 10 (IPS) -- The Lajes air base, in Portugal's
Azores Islands, is playing a prominent role in the movement of U.S.
troops and war material on their way to the Persian Gulf region for
a possible attack on Saddam Hussein's Iraq.
The Luso-U.S. base on Terceira, one of the nine islands of the
Azores archipelago, is in fact an immense aircraft carrier anchored
in the Atlantic, halfway between Europe and North America.
