It seldom snowed during my childhood in Virginia, but on those rare occasions
when white flakes would drift from the sky, I could be sure of two things:
1) schools would close, and 2) we would have barbecued spare ribs for supper.
That schools would close was a given: A mere centimeter of snow on the
streets would overwhelm the city's snowplows (both of them). My father
