Giovanni Agnelli, the patriarch of the Fiat auto company whose jetset
lifestyle, vast financial network and aristocratic air became symbols
of Italy's postwar rebirth and prosperity, has died after a months-
long illness. He was 81.
The death of Agnelli, who was better known by his nickname "Gianni,
" ends an era for Italy's biggest private employer, which in recent
years has suffered major financial problems.
Agnelli, the company's honorary chairman since 1996, had been suffering
