U.S. Approved Sale of Atropine to Iraq

UNITED NATIONS _ Over the last six years the United States has approved
Iraqi purchases of 3.5 million doses of atropine, a heart drug that
American officials now fear could be used to protect Iraqi soldiers
using nerve gas.
A U.N. Security Council sanctions committee _ with the approval of
the United States _ allowed four contracts for 2 million vials of
atropine, Hasmik Egian, spokeswoman for the U.N. oil-for-food program,
said Friday.
A fifth contract to supply Iraq with 1.5 million vials was also recently
