The old man had come a long way on his painfully enlarged legs in
search of relief from elephantiasis, a disfiguring disease caused
by an intestinal worm.
But the free treatment on offer in this small village on Tanzania'
s Indian Ocean coast was for river blindness, another disease caused
by a different worm from the same family.
"I don't know why they pass me by; I have sold everything to get treatment
for my legs," said a weary Alias Benjamin, who had been a foreman
at a sisal rope factory until the disease forced him to retire 40 ...
