Inner Mongolia green belt to halt spread of deserts, XINHUA

HOHHOT, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- China has poured huge sums of money into
environmental
protection projects in Inner Mongolia since 2000 in a bid to protect
the
whole of north China, particularly the capital, Beijing, from worsening
sandstorms.
Meng Qinglong, a planning official with the government of the Inner
Mongolia Autonomous Region, said the region's investment in ecological
construction was among the highest in China.
In 2000, the central government pledged 1.75 billion yuan for
ecological construction, the second highest amount for a Chinese region.
