Neurologists who injected a rabies virus into rats say they have managed
to map the complex neural network involved in a blinking eye.
As many as 30 categories of brain cell play a role in four kinds of
eyelid movement displayed by rats, other animals and people. The flutters
include automatic blinking that keeps the pupil moist and the rapid-
closure reflex triggered by an approaching object.
Until now, not all the brain areas that activate when an eyelid opens
