Fed: UN Security Council's survival in doubt - Butler

SYDNEY, Sept 19 AAP - The survival of the UN Security Council would be in doubt if the US mounted an independent attack on Iraq, former Australian ambassador to the UN Richard Butler said today.

Mr Butler, who headed the United Nations special commission (UNSCOM) to disarm Iraq from 1997 to 1999, said Iraq had been able to reject a final list of disarmament demands in 1998 because it knew the Security Council was divided.
