MACEDONIA-GREECE: PEACE-SEEKING REPUBLIC WELCOMES END OF EMBARGO

BELGRADE, Oct. 20 (IPS) -- The resumption of trade relations
between Greece and Macedonia this week has fueled hope that the
only former Yugoslav republic to peacefully gain independence will
continue to stave off war and economic ruin.
Cross-border traffic between the two Balkan states was halted
20 months ago, when Athens imposed an economic blockade against
Macedonia in a dispute over its name and flag. Coupled with damages
incurred as a result of U.N. sanctions against Serbia, Macedonia's
losses since 1992 exceed $4 billion.
