Hasadeh Vehameara Asher Bo ("The Field and the Cave that is Therein") by Eli Schreiber, published by Zmora Bitan in its Pages for Hebrew Literature series, is one of the most puzzling novels I have encountered in a long time. It is entertaining, imaginative, and written in brilliant Hebrew - but somehow the whole ends up being less than the sum of the parts, and that, in fact, could be the point. Schreiber's title refers to the Cave of the Machpela in Hebron, which Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite in order to bury Sarah, and which, as no one needs ...
