THE Centenary of Federation marks Australia's 100th anniversary as
a united
democratic nation. On January 1, 1901, through a grand Federation
Ceremony
held at Sydney's Centennial Park, the modern nation of Australia officially
came into being. This was after the six colonies had agreed to band
together.
Which explains why the country is formally known as the Commonwealth
of
Australia.
But the journey to nationhood was long and winding. The efforts to
unite the Australian colonies into one federated nation stretched
over
