Thor Heyerdahl of Kon-Tiki fame dies at age 87

Norwegian scientist and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl, who sailed to fame
aboard his balsa log raft Kon-Tiki in 1947, died peacefully in his
sleep Thursday in Italy at age 87.
Heyerdahl stopped taking food, water or medication in early April
after being diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor at a hospital near
his family retreat in Italy.
Thor Heyerdahl Jr., told The Associated Press in a telephone interview
from his home in Norway that his father passed away at 7:10 p.m. (1710
GMT) Thursday.
