Seven years after abandoning most of its Fascist trappings and moving
toward mainstream conservatism, a key ally in Silvio Berlusconi's
coalition promises at its party congress to snuff out any lingering
vestiges of the black-shirt era.
The National Alliance's attempts to buff up its image have met with
mixed success. Some, including many in Italy's Jewish community, are
still wary of the party and its articulate, ambitious leader, Gianfranco
