FED: BHP Billiton urges reform of US steel industry

CANBERRA, March 6 AAP - Mining giant BHP Billiton today urged the United States to take a tough stand on steel industry reform rather than penalise efficient producers like Australia through a tariff on imports.

BHP Billiton overhauled its declining steel business in 1999 with the closure of its Newcastle steelworks in NSW.

Industry and political leaders have hit out at an overnight decision by the US government to impose tariffs of up to 30 per cent on steel imports.
