Gerard van Velde of the Netherlands won Olympic gold in the 1,000 meters Saturday, breaking the world record and his fourth-place jinx.

Joey Cheek earned the Americans' fourth speedskating medal of these games, taking bronze in a U.S. record time of 1 minute, 07.61 seconds.

Van Velde skated in 1:07.18, slapping his left hand to his head in disbelief as he crossed the line. He bettered the previous record of 1:07.72 set by Jeremy Wotherspoon of Canada last year.
