When Count Leo Tolstoy once decided to walk the 200 kilometers south from Moscow to Yasnaya Polyana, his family estate near Tula, it took him a whole week. Normally, Tolstoy made the trip in two days, stopping overnight at Serpukhov. Only in his later years did he allow himself the luxury of taking the train to Kozlova Zaseka, a minor station near the estate. The trip to the Yasnaya Polyana estate museum also used to be a trying one for Tolstoy fans.
