American policymakers and media newsrooms have suddenly rediscovered Southeast Asia. Unfortunately, much of the attention has been ill-informed, rash and unduly militaristic. Bellicose language directed at the perceived presence of Osama bin Laden's Qaida network in the region serves to reinforce a perception of the United States as an imperial power and bully.
