LAGOS, December 18 (Xinhua) -- A United Nations-backed conference on the
troubled Niger Delta region of Nigeria has called for the establishment
of a Niger Delta Development Bank so as to facilitate the development of
the southern oil-rich region, the News Agency of Nigeria reported on Tuesday.

A communique issued at the end of the conference in the southern city
of Port Harcourt was quoted as saying the establishment of the bank should
be part of the Niger Delta Development Commission's strategy to address
the capital needs of indigenous entrepreneurs.
