Saving Johor's giant clams

THE giant clam, the world's biggest shellfish, was once a common
feature in Johor waters.
Today, two of the biggest of the species, Tridacna gigas and Tridacna
derasa, are extinct, with only fossils found on the seabed of islands around
Johor. The other smaller breeds are on the brink of extinction.
A group of reef researchers from Universiti Sains Malaysia is working
towards conserving and increasing its population in Johor.
Their preliminary findings show that the clear waters and the depth of
reefs in waters around islands off Johor are ...
