Under pressure in Kandahar, Taliban dig in, patrol and urge citizens to stay calm

Despite daily U.S. bombing and reports of mutinies by local Pashtun
tribesmen, the Taliban's grip on its southern stronghold Kandahar
remains strong, according to Afghans arriving Friday in the Pakistani
border city of Quetta.
One of them, Fazal Karim, said he was in the back of a taxi driving
past the Kandahar airport when soldiers of the Islamic militia pulled
over his vehicle.
