Friends gathering for the funeral of former President Juan Bosch on Friday remembered their hometown hero as a confident youngster, who despite being born into a family of entrepreneurs, went on to fight for the poor.

Thousands, dressed in black and purple to represent the colors of Bosch's Dominican Liberation Party, stood outside as Bosch's coffin arrived. Many chanted Bosch's name and threw flowers at the hearse.
