"GUS Must Be Crazy", screamed the cover of popular Gamma magazine in
Indonesia. It had the picture of Gus Dur with one hand covering his face
and in the background, the dry and barren Kalahari desert of Africa, with
a giraffe thrown in for good measure.
Obviously, the publisher of the Indonesian magazine was using the hit
The Gods Must Be Crazy movie of the 1980s as the source of the joke.
That is how it is with Gus Dur. Not a day passes in Indonesia without
a new joke about the president cropping up, and quite a number are cruel.
