REGARDLESS of whether or not it is a service in the cause of Islam,
the Taliban regime, with its determination to destroy all statues in Afghanistan,
is going to be further isolated from the world community. It has made it
clear that despite the international appeals for the preservation of their
country's pre-Islamic heritage, it is going ahead with the demolition of
all Buddhist icons including two massive Buddha figures sculpted out of
